“We plan the way we want to live, but only GOD makes us able to live it.”
Proverbs 16:9 MSG
Good morning! Are you up? Do you have a plan for your day? Maybe it’s full. Maybe not so much. Maybe it’s a vacation day. And then again, it could be another day at the office.
You have the ability to plan your day—but not the ability to execute. Only God makes us able to live today. That should really wake us up.
No wonder the Psalmist tells us to “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
We are not to take for granted “this day”. “THIS is the day that the LORD has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
So, the project you want to complete today; or the studying you have to get done; or the cookies you desire to bake; or the fall cleaning that is before you; or the work-out you so desperately need—are all planned and waiting for you to accomplish.
But WHO allows you to accomplish these plans? These tasks? God. Only our Ever-Loving, All-Knowing Father. He knows the end from the beginning. The beginning from the end. We see only a snapshot view.
Psalm 139:16 says “all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
So how then shall we live? Grateful. Knowing we are totally dependent on Him. Aware of our every moment. Knowing that your life is in His hands. And that’s a very good place to be.
This approach, to your everyday living, allows you to rest in His care. “Casting ALL your care on Him, for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
We have a God who personally cares for us. He is intimate. He is not afar. He knows what is best for us which means it’s up to us to trust Him—or not. You can’t trust for me. I can’t trust for you. But when you do recklessly abandon yourself to His care, your moments take on a whole new meaning.
You realize that each moment is a gift from God Himself. No longer do you think you deserve this day and all you’ve planned. You now live with a very keen awareness that your Heavenly Father is breathing every breath into you to live! To really LIVE!
As Jim Elliot said, “we are to walk as if our next step would cross the threshold of heaven.” That’s a game-changer. That’s when you come to know that you know, “I can plan my ways—but GOD directs my steps.” And you fall on your knees knowing Whom to thank.
