At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them walking on the water. Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”
He said, “Come ahead.” Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus.
Matthew 14:26; 28-30a MSG
So…you’re in a boat that’s being battered by a storm. And it’s 4AM! You’re drenched, feeling a bit seasick, discouraged and a long way from shore. All of a sudden, in the distance, a figure appears and fear takes over.
Then, Jesus’ calm, reassuring voice cuts through the wind and waves, “it’s me; don’t be afraid.” Words of comfort. Welcoming words. Words that mean rescue from peril.
But your bold co-worker, Peter, decides to put this Water Walker to the test, calling out, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”
As Jesus is defying the principles of gravity that He originally put in place, He responds to Peter, “Come ahead.”
There had to be a point-in-time when Peter decided to take his weight off his back foot, which was secure in the boat, and shifted all his weight to his front foot onto the water, which made NO logical sense, as everyoneknows a human is unable to walk on water.
But Peter wasn’t everyone. Peter wasn’t me. “Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus.” He confidently placed all his trust in the One that could save him…the Water Walker, Jesus.
That’s it! My eyes on Jesus and off of the tumult around me.
Lord, help me to get out of the boat.
