Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.”
Luke 5:5-6 MSG
I know exactly how Simon Peter felt. Waiting for fish to be caught-up in strategically placed nets. Fished all night. Caught nothing. Zero. Zilch.
Been there. Done that. Not with nets and certainly not dependent on catching fish for my livelihood. Just my Snoopy pole and my dad. But it seemed like forever without even a bite.
Simon is spent. He’s scrubbed the nets and just wants to go home and put his feet up. Enter Jesus. He’s been teaching the crowds and seeing a fishing boat at the shore, He tells Peter to “push out into deep water and let your nets out for a catch.”
Simon could have easily let his feelings speak, but his conviction triumphed despite his fisherman prowess. He could have retorted, “You’re an accomplished public speaker, but I KNOW fishing…and they ain’t biting now.” But he didn’t…as this is “Master Jesus”. So he replied, “But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.”
That needs to be my immediate response, as well. Jesus KNOWS what is best for me. And just like the miracle Peter experienced, “they filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch”, Jesus desires for me to trust His timing and His way. He’s waiting to show His glory through my obedience…even when I don’t feel like it.
