“Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.”
Ephesians 4:30 MSG
Have you ever caused someone’s heart to break? Has your heart ever been broken? God’s has.
You can grieve Almighty God. That’s a true but sad statement. The One who created you and knew you before you were born….you can break His heart. Ugh.
“Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you.” (Jeremiah 1:5 MSG)
God, the Holy Spirit, came to live in you ever since you accepted Jesus as your personal Savior. Ever since you asked Him to forgive all your yuck. You gratefully believed the truth, “Jesus is the way, truth and life. And no one can come to the Father but by Him.” (John 14:6)
So now the same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you!! The Holy Spirit.
“But if God himself has taken up residence in your life, you can hardly be thinking more of yourself than of him. Anyone, of course, who has not welcomed this invisible but clearly present God, the Spirit of Christ, won’t know what we’re talking about. But for you who welcome him, in whom he dwells—even though you still experience all the limitations of sin—you yourself experience life on God’s terms. It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s!” (Romans 8:9-11 MSG)
As the Holy Spirit lives and breathes in you, He is making you spiritually fit. When you don’t follow His prompting and turn your own way…you grieve Him.
That’s what breaks His heart. Our sin. Our disobedience. Our pride. He desires that you confess your wrongdoing and return to Him. Remember, He has given us the best gift ever: the Holy Spirit! Don’t take such a gift for granted.
