Do you remember the old Doritos commercial that Jay Leno made popular? “Crunch all you want. We’ll make more.”
Perfectly positioned. Targeted audience. Reassuring the tortilla chip consumer, “No worries, keep crunching, the chips will reproduce, so eat them with everything, all the time.”
Their marketing statement reminds me of my daily mission. Actually, it’s what Jesus teaches…how I need to live so that He can reproduce Himself in and through me. Not, “We’ll make more”, but “He’ll make more!”
And that means I need to be figuratively “crunched”, otherwise I’ll be nothing but a single “Dorito.” (And who can eat just one?)
Jesus didn’t use the modern-day Dorito as His word picture…but a grain of wheat. “Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never more than a grain of wheat. BUT, if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over.” John 12:24 MSG
When my wants, my agenda, my ways cease to exist, it’s then that I sprout. It’s then that I can be used far more than I could ask, think or imagine. But, it’s the dying part, the “crunching” part, that I don’t welcome, even though I know the Master Gardener carefully tends to me.
Or do I really KNOW He has His best for me? He has His purpose-filled life for me? He desires that I trust Him with all my heart, soul, mind and strength? (Easy to write. Hard to execute.)
Hmmmmm. I might be at a crisis of belief. And that’s what keeps me from dying to self.
“In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal.” John 12:25 MSG
Yup, He will just keep making more and more life in and through me! Now and forever.
So, keep “crunching”, Lord, as I keep dying to myself and You keep making more…
