“Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children.
Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night.
Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.”
Deuteronomy 6:6-9
What spills out of you? When life bumps into you, it’s what is already inside of you, that spills out. If a pitcher is full of milk, milk will spill out of it…as milk is already inside the pitcher. It’s the same with our lives. What is inside of you will spill out of you. Whether you want it to or not.
That’s why Moses is encouraging us to “Write the commandments on your heart. Get them INSIDE of you and INSIDE of your children.”
And how do you do that? Well, he goes on to tell us, “Talk about them wherever you are.” Not just at church or bedtime prayers at night. Wherever you are. That means if you’re waiting at the school bus, talk about them. If you’re making cookies, talk about them. If you’re helping with homework, talk about them.
Therefore, you need to be familiar with them yourself. If you’re going to talk about “something” with another, you need to know about that “something”.
God’s Word, His very commandments and promises need to be in your heart…in your mind, will and emotions…and then you will overflow talking about Him “from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night.”
It won’t be on your to-do checklist anymore as you can’t help but overflow. Your passion for God runs deep. Your children (and others around you) will catch that passion as you overflow from the inside out!
